For some 25 years now, we have been designing gardens in France and throughout the Mediterranean region. Moving to southern Morocco in 1998 made us realise the need for a different kind of garden – designed with low maintenance and water scarcity in mind.
So we came up with a new approach, based on the plants that grow naturally in the world’s arid regions. We noticed, for instance, that a young desert like the Sahara supports only sparse vegetation. Older deserts, on the other hand, harbour plants that have adapted over thousands of years to their arid habitat. This is true of the deserts of Yemen, Madagascar and parts of Africa and Mexico, which offer a virtually limitless range of species for dry-climate gardens.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF GARDEN – DESIGNED WITH LOW MAINTENANCE AND WATER SCARCITY IN MIND
Our approach draws on the expertise of our associates, ‘Pépinières d’Azrou’ near Agadir and ‘Casa Botanica’ in Marrakech. Run by two gifted horticulturalists, these nurseries supply all of the plants for our gardens, propagating them for our exclusive use from the cuttings and seeds we bring back from our travels.
We have designed dozens of gardens in southern Morocco – which you can read about via the links to mainstream magazines that we offer on this website. Alternatively, you can book a stay in Ollivier Verra’s guesthouse and let him show you around the gardens we have designed in Taroudant. The house is the very first building we designed in Morocco.
Originally constructed as a private home, it is surrounded by an oasis that we created and planted from scratch.
